Why We Care
All too often, we see the headlines of horrendous abuses of children - mostly perpetrated by their families. As a result, we become desensitized or even turn away in despair.
But Murphy-Harpst is there to pick up the pieces. Many of the children who arrive have experienced repeated failure in as many as 10 to 20 placements. Annually, more than 3.5 million children are reported to state and local Child Protective Services (CPS) agencies as victims of child abuse and neglect. For these victims of severe abuse, recovery and healing is one of the toughest challenges. Many of them are suicidal as young as age seven.
Healthcare and social workers have limited resources to create the structured and therapeutic environment necessary to help and reverse a cycle of cruelty and neglect. To help these children cope, around-the-clock therapy is critical. Without our help, many of these youth are eventually incarcerated in state mental institutions and prisons. They need our help and we need yours.
