John Oxendine and friends raise money for children’s center.

May 1, 2008 (Rome, GA) The inaugural Hope for Children Golf Classic was held April 28 with proceeds targeted for a proposed Special Treatment Unit to be located on the Cedartown campus of Murphy-Harpst.

State Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine served as Honorary Chairman of the event hosted by the Arby’s Foundation and chaired by Dr. Jeffrey Gallups and Dr. Nancy Gallups. Presenting sponsors were Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia and State Farm Insurance.

Golfers from across the state gathered on the links of St. Ives Country Club in Duluth, Georgia for a round of golf with a purpose. A check for $106,000 was presented to Murphy-Harpst by Commissioner Oxendine and the Drs. Gallups.

Murphy-Harpst is a residential treatment facility and group home serving some of Georgia’s most abused and at-risk children. The center offers a continuum of therapeutic programs including Specialized Foster Care, Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment, and other services. Murphy-Harpst also operates a HeadStart and pre-kindergarten program for some 200 children in Polk County.
