Murphy-Harpst Today
The Harpst Center is a residential treatment
center where children with severe emotional problems receive
professional care. Largely due to abuse and neglect, these
children are placed here from their county court systems or
other referral sources responsible for children in need of
help. For many of these children, the Harpst Center is a last
chance to become stable and whole again. In addition, the
Harpst Center supervises a community-based therapeutic foster
care program.
The Murphy Center serves pre-school children
from the local community through a partnership with Head Start.
The offices of the Polk County Council for Children and Families,
The Court Appointed Special Advocate, and the District Office
of the "Right from the Start" Medicaid program are
all housed on that campus. Over 150 children are in school
there daily. The mission to children and to the community
continues from humble beginnings and the determination of
Sarah Murphy. Today, for many little children, the Murphy
Campus is a first chance at education, aftercare services for children completing the residential treatment program, therapeutic wraparound services for children and families, and is developing an array of other community services designed to complete the Murphy-Harpst continuum of care.
